Chinese Railway Station Names: East, South, West and North Explained
Dong means East, Nan South, Xi West and Bei North, but the complete station name is what you must match. 北京, 北京南 and 北京西 appear as different stations in the official selector. Use the Chinese name beside your booking-system spelling, keep entrance directions separate, and check both station names when planning a connection.
The four characters and the spellings to recognise
Chinese railway station names often add a direction to the city name. Read the complete name: removing the final direction can change which station you are identifying. The four terms below are ordinary Mandarin direction words.
| Character | Pinyin with tone | Common unmarked spelling | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 东 | dōng | dong | East |
| 南 | nán | nan | South |
| 西 | xī | xi | West |
| 北 | běi | bei | North |
You may see an English translation such as “South,” or a joined pinyin form such as beijingnan. Spaces, capital letters and tone marks can vary between descriptions. Recognising nan helps you read the name; it does not let you drop that part when comparing stations.
Some city names themselves contain a direction character. 北京, Beijing, already contains 北. In 北京北, Beijingbei, the additional final 北 distinguishes the station name. Find the full city-name portion before interpreting an extra character as a station ending.
Beijing examples checked in the official station selector
On 30 October 2026, typing beijing into the departure-station selector on the Chinese 12306 homepage displayed these six names together on its first visible results page. This verifies the names and displayed pinyin below; it is not a list of every station serving the city, or confirmation of a train service on your travel date. [1]
| Full Chinese name | Displayed 12306 pinyin | English reading aid | What to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 北京 | beijing | Beijing Railway Station | No extra direction after 北京; keep the full station name. |
| 北京北 | beijingbei | Beijing North | The final 北 / bei is part of this different station name. |
| 北京东 | beijingdong | Beijing East | The final 东 / dong is part of this different station name. |
| 北京南 | beijingnan | Beijing South | The final 南 / nan is part of this different station name. |
| 北京西 | beijingxi | Beijing West | The final 西 / xi is part of this different station name. |
| 北京大兴 | beijingdaxing | Beijing Daxing | Keep 大兴 / daxing too; it is not one of the four direction endings. |
The unqualified 北京 and the direction-qualified names are separate candidates in the selector. Do not replace the confirmed station with whichever candidate appears first. The selector also demonstrates that not every distinguishing ending is one of the four directions: 大兴, Daxing, must be kept as part of 北京大兴.
These English descriptions explain the Chinese names. They are not a promise that every English booking screen or map app uses exactly this typography. Use the wording displayed by your own confirmed booking and keep the matching Chinese name beside it.
Separate station name, entrance direction and boarding gate
A direction inside a station name identifies part of that station’s name. A direction attached to an entrance describes where to enter the same station. Those are different levels of information.
For example, if instructions describe a north entrance at 北京南, the station is still 北京南. Do not transform it into 北京北. Keep a separate line for the entrance or drop-off point, so a map search and a driver instruction do not accidentally replace the station name.
Your boarding gate, platform, carriage and seat are further details. A directional station name does not tell you those assignments. Follow the current station display and staff instructions, matching the actual train number and departure information. An old screenshot of a gate assignment is not a reason to ignore an updated announcement.
Similarly, the words East or South do not tell you that a station is closest to your hotel, that every high-speed train uses it, or that it is interchangeable with another station in the city. Check the actual route and station rather than predicting services or transfer time from the direction word.
A same-city station check before leaving your accommodation
- Read the confirmed booking. Record the departure station separately from the arrival station. A search result you considered earlier may not be the train you actually booked.
- Keep the full Chinese name. Include any direction or other ending. Ask your booking provider or the official railway channel if the name is unclear.
- Compare the map listing. Match the entire station name and check the location, then add the entrance or drop-off instructions separately.
- Check the journey to that station. Use current transport information for your departure time and allow for navigating the station. This guide does not supply one universal arrival buffer.
- Compare again before the final trip. Check that the full station name on your saved card, map route and confirmed booking agree.
The 12306 English FAQ identifies the official website and app and states that passengers should take the train for the date and train number indicated on the ticket. It also explains the identity-document requirement for e-ticket travel. Use the station-name card as a planning aid alongside those requirements. [2]
For connections, compare two full station names
Write the first train’s arrival station beside the next train’s departure station. Compare the complete names, not only the city. An arrival at 北京南 and a departure from 北京西 mean your itinerary names different stations.
When the names differ, verify the actual transfer route, access, current operating information and available time before relying on the connection. When the names match, still check the station’s current connection and boarding arrangements. A matching name alone does not guarantee that a particular connection is possible.
If you discover you are at the wrong station, seek railway assistance promptly and check your options through the official channel or your booking provider. Do not assume you can board the same train at another city station or receive an automatic free ticket change. The full itinerary, train stops and current rules matter.
Four cases: can you spot the station-name mistake?
These are original fictional planning cases. They use the verified Beijing names but do not describe booked trains or tested transfers.
Case 1
A confirmed booking says 北京南 / beijingnan. The map route ends at 北京 / beijing. Is the city-name match enough?
Show answer and explanation for case 1
No. The full station names differ. Recheck the route for 北京南 before relying on it.
The final 南 / nan is part of the confirmed departure station. A route to the unqualified 北京 is not a substitute merely because both contain Beijing.
Case 2
Your instructions say “north entrance of Beijing South.” Should you search for 北京北 / beijingbei instead?
Show answer and explanation for case 2
No. Keep 北京南 / beijingnan as the station and record the entrance separately.
North describes the entrance in this fictional instruction. It does not change South in the station name to North. Verify the actual entrance instructions for your journey.
Case 3
One itinerary arrives at 北京南 and the next train departs from 北京西. Can you treat this as a same-station connection?
Show answer and explanation for case 3
No. The full names identify different station candidates. Check a station-to-station transfer before relying on the itinerary.
Matching the city is insufficient. This example does not calculate a transfer time or confirm that any specific pair of trains can be connected.
Case 4
A saved note shortens 北京大兴 / beijingdaxing to 北京 because Daxing is not East, South, West or North. Is that a safe abbreviation for matching the booking?
Show answer and explanation for case 4
No. Keep 大兴 / daxing as well. The complete station name is the check.
The four-direction key helps recognise common endings; it is not a rule that other endings can be removed. The official selector displays 北京大兴 separately from 北京.
Save a full-name card for each journey
Download the full railway-station name check card (TXT). Fill the departure and arrival fields from the actual confirmed booking. If there is a connection, add the next departure station on its own line.
For a driver or hotel desk, you can prepare this short note: “Please help me reach [full Chinese departure station]. My train leaves on [date] at [time]. Please confirm the station and the appropriate drop-off entrance.” Keep the station name prominent; a city name alone is too broad.
You can also copy the simpler Chinese request 请送我到【完整车站名】。 — “Please take me to [full station name].” Replace the bracketed part with the exact Chinese name. This is our original language aid, not a message sent by this website or a guarantee of transport.
Leave passport numbers, private booking references and payment details off a copy shared for directions. The 12306 FAQ says an itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt cannot be used as a ticket; this homemade station card is likewise a navigation aid, not a boarding document. Retain the required identity document and follow your actual ticket and railway instructions. [2]
