12306 Train Ticket Refunds: Ordinary Fees and the 30-Minute Exception
Identify the issuing channel and actual ticket first. Check every accidental-purchase condition together; otherwise review ordinary refund timing, special changed-ticket rules and the displayed amount. Worked clocks and rounding examples explain the decision.
First identify the order and the action
For a cancelled China Railway journey, start with the actual ticket, its scheduled departure and the channel that issued it. An ordinary refund and the 12306 limited free refund for an accidental purchase have different conditions. A ticket change is a third action: changing a journey does not simply cancel it. The public rules checked on 7 November 2026 support the distinctions below; the applicable order instructions still determine the transaction you can complete.
Keep the order reference private. Check whether payment completed, whether a ticket was already changed, and which passengers you intend to cancel. An agency request is not confirmation that 12306 received a refund. If you bought through an agency, ask it about its handling procedure and any separate service charge; do not infer its terms from the official railway refund percentage.
- Read the confirmed train, full departure station and travel date.
- Compare the requested action time with that train's scheduled departure.
- Check whether the special accidental-purchase conditions all apply.
- If they do not, read the ordinary refund amount and applicable instructions.
- After acting, retain the actual result and follow the payment provider's settlement information.
When the 30-minute accidental-purchase exception applies
Refund Question 17 in the official English FAQ describes a free refund for an accidental purchase for travel dates starting on 2 February 2026. It applies to registered 12306 users purchasing through the official website, app or Alipay mini-program and paying electronically or with reward points. The refund must be processed within 30 minutes of purchase and at least four hours before departure. Merely starting a request is not the same as that completed result. Both clocks matter. [1]

| Check | Official condition | Question for your order |
|---|---|---|
| Channel | Official 12306 website, app or Alipay mini-program; registered user. | Did this order use a listed channel? |
| Payment | Electronic payment or reward points. | Does this payment match the condition? |
| Time | Within 30 minutes of purchase and at least four hours before departure. | Do both intervals qualify now? |
| Daily allowance | One free refund on one order per day. | Has the allowance already been used? |
| Product exclusions | Rebooked, multi-ride/periodic, pre-ordered, waitlisted, air-rail or waterway-rail, group and Railway e-Pass tickets are excluded. | Is this an excluded order? |
The FAQ includes domestic trains and cross-border services to Hong Kong West Kowloon in this policy. That does not remove the listed channel, timing or product conditions. Do not apply this exception to every agency booking or assume each passenger in one order has a separate daily allowance. The source does not justify a promised button position or a guarantee about your account's result; no logged-in refund was tested for this guide.
If departure is only three hours away, a ticket bought ten minutes ago does not meet the four-hour condition. If purchase was forty minutes ago, a departure tomorrow does not repair the purchase-age condition. Check the actual order promptly rather than waiting for an explanation to turn into eligibility.
The ordinary refund bands and their limits
The Chinese 12306 window-refund FAQ says requests ordinarily must be made before the departure shown on the ticket. It lists the following ordinary rates. These are railway percentages, not a total including an agency's separate charges. A ticket changed after departure is listed as non-refundable. Do not treat a general English FAQ reference to exceptional staff handling as an automatic two-hour grace period. [2]

| Time before scheduled departure | Published rate | Invented RMB 800 fare |
|---|---|---|
| At least eight days | No ordinary refund fee | 0 |
| At least 48 hours, but under eight days | 5% | 40 |
| At least 24 hours, but under 48 | 10% | 80 |
| Under 24 hours, before departure | 20% | 160 |
The Chinese wording includes eight days and uses inclusive “at least” boundaries for 48 and 24 hours. The reviewed English paragraph uses less precise boundary wording, so this table follows the Chinese source. A paid fee is rounded in half-yuan units: below RMB 0.25 rounds down, RMB 0.25 to below 0.75 becomes 0.50, and 0.75 or more rounds up to the next yuan. The minimum ordinary refund fee is RMB 2; that minimum does not create a fee for a qualifying fee-free refund.
There are further circumstances to check. The Chinese FAQ charges 5% when a ticket originally less than eight days from departure is changed to a train over eight days away and then refunded over eight days away. Changing to a lower-priced ticket can also produce a refund fee on the difference. Do not use a rescheduled departure date alone to claim a free cancellation. Printed reimbursement or cash-paid orders can require a station process; read the exact channel instruction rather than assuming every refund is entirely online.
Three original checks: timing, rounding and rescheduling
All dates, amounts and orders here are invented. They illustrate the rules checked for this article, not available trains, tested refunds or a prediction of a future policy.
- Two clocks: an invented purchase is at 09:10 on 5 November 2026, hypothetical refund processing at 09:35, and departure at 09:10 on 6 November. Purchase age is 25 minutes; departure is 23 hours 35 minutes away. The timing conditions fit, but channel, product and daily-allowance checks remain necessary.
- Small ordinary fee: an invented RMB 53 fare at a 5% rate produces RMB 2.65 before rounding, then RMB 2.50. At an invented RMB 20 fare, 5% is RMB 1, so the ordinary minimum would make the fee RMB 2.
- Changed date: an originally near-departure ticket is moved beyond eight days and then cancelled beyond eight days. The special changed-ticket paragraph prevents assuming the ordinary eight-day row automatically means no fee.
For your own note, record purchase time, intended request time, full scheduled departure, channel, ticket type, previous change and the displayed fee. Distinguish “request attempted,” “refund confirmed” and “money received.” The English FAQ describes returning funds through the original payment route; it does not establish one universal bank settlement time. Contact the relevant official channel or issuing provider when the result remains unclear.
Four checks before treating the record as a result
These original scenarios test the distinctions above; they describe no actual order or recovery.
Check 1: A ticket was bought ten minutes ago, but departure is only three hours away. Do the two timing conditions for the accidental-purchase exception fit?
No. The four-hour-before-departure condition is not met.
Purchase age alone cannot satisfy both clocks; all other listed conditions also need checking.
Check 2: An ordinary qualifying refund has no refund fee. Does the RMB 2 minimum make it chargeable?
No. The ordinary minimum does not create a fee in a fee-free band.
The minimum concerns a chargeable ordinary refund fee.
Check 3: An invented RMB 53 fare attracts a 5% ordinary fee. What is the rounded fee?
RMB 2.50.
53 × 0.05 = 2.65; the fraction 0.65 lies in the half-yuan band. This is fictional arithmetic.
Check 4: An agency says it has requested a refund. Does that establish the railway confirmation and funds in your account?
No. Keep request, confirmed refund and money received separate.
Ask the actual issuing/payment channels about the status; no universal settlement time is supplied.
For the other action, compare the separate ticket-change fee and payment rules. Use the actual ticket and issuing channel; a practical guide makes no transaction.
